Speeder and Personal Transportation Guide

Speeders are the lifeblood of travel in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Those coming over from other games, such as World of Warcraft, may be confused on how speeders work compared to more conventional means of travel such as mounts. It’s understandable, because Star Wars handles land transportation a little bit differently than the other games.

Speeders go by different names: land speeders, speeder bikes, personal vehicles, hover bikes, and mounts. They’re for sale on most planets past level 25 and come in many different flavors. If you’re looking for information on travel within the Old Republic, check out our travel guide.

Land Speeder Basics

Land speeders are available starting at level 25 and increase land based movement speed by 90% and costs 40,000 credits. The actual speeder will cost you 8000 credits, bringing the total to 48,000 credits to hop on your first ride. This is your first big purchase in the game and a difficult one to make at that. See our “Saving up for Your First Speeder” section below for more details.

Speeders contain two components. The first is “Speeder Piloting” which is a skill that currently has three ranks. The second is the actual physical speeder that you’ll need to purchase from a vendor or obtain as a drop.

This is the first basic speeder and will last you until level 40, at which point you can buy the next speeder piloting rank. The problem here is that your original speeder will not move at the new speed, so you’ll also need to upgrade your physical speeder. The process again repeats at level 50 when you can unlock the last speeder rank.

Speeder Piloting Ranks

Rank 1 (Level 25): The first rank costs 40,000 credits and associated vehicles cost 8000 credits from the vendor. You gain a 90% increase in movement speed.

Rank 2 (Level 40): The second rank costs 210,000 credits and associated vehicles cost 25,000 credits from the vendor. You gain a 100% increase in movement speed.

Rank 3 (Level 50): The third rank costs 330,000 credits and associated vehicles 55,000 credits from standard vendors and various amounts of credits and tokens from specialty vendors. You gain a 110% increase in movement speed.

Speeder training is obtained from your class trainer while the various vehicles are available on the fleet station and associated worlds. Some vehicles are drops, crafted, come from the collector’s edition, or some other miscellaneous source.

Speeders

Speeders come in three different varieties. The first speeder you’ll obtain at rank one is the one you kind of stand on. The second tier is the more traditional speeders that you actually sit on and ride in and look like bikes. The last tier contains a mixture of the previous tiers and speeders that look more like vehicles (like the Korrealis Commander) and less like bikes.

Vendors exist on most worlds that you’ll visit after level 25 and many contain different colors of the same frame. Take note of the different variations in your travels so that you’ll be in the position to buy the right speeder when you have enough money.

Saving for your First Speeder

It’s expensive. It’s a challenge. It’s also very easy to reach with a little bit of discipline. If you have a gathering crew skill, then your task will be slightly easier, but you’ll find saving up to be rather easy. Stop your spending sometime around level 20. Use accommodations for gear upgrades and sell any valuable items on the market. You can also avoid upgrading any skills that don’t provide an immediate benefit, say a stun that’ll give you a nominal increase in damage with no additional duration.

Warzones are also another great option. Warzones have a huge credit payout if you win and you’ll earn warzone accommodations alongside them, which interestingly enough can be used for the level 50 mounts. You can also gear a nice set of gear at both speeder milestones with them, so be sure to save everything!

Use the galactic trade market to offload items and modifications you don’t need anymore. You can also sell a lot of your lower level crew skill components for a good bit of cash. Don’t fret! You can gather more later and gather it more efficiently with your new speeder.

The later levels are a bit more challenging because skills start costing more. I’ve heard from many allies that they were unable to buy their second rank at level 40. Of course, you shouldn’t worry too much past the aesthetics. The later ranks just add 10% more each time, which isn’t a massive increase.

I hope you’ve gotten your speeder questions answered. If you have any more, then feel free to post in the comments section below!
