Top Five Reasons to Give SWTOR Free-to-Play a Try

Free-to-play is coming to Star Wars: The Old Republic on November 15th, 2012. A lot of players are wondering if they should come back to SWTOR and even more are wondering if SWTOR is worth a try. It’s pretty reasonable to ask this question, considering the game is going F2P before it has even been out for a year and it’s one of the first true AAA MMOs to switch over to the F2P model.

We here at SWTORHUB believe that SWTOR is definitely worth coming back to or picking up for the first time. That’s why we’ve compiled five awesome reasons for you to give the F2P SWTOR a try.

Copious amounts of bugfixes and updates.

The game might not have been out for a full year, but we’re looking at a good time for them to polish the game, improve the quality of life, and squash tons of bugs. Game enjoyment has dramatically increased with server transfers, the dungeon finder, and lots of other critical updates now in the game.

The game isn’t perfect, but there isn’t a single MMO out there that is. As a matter of a fact, I can’t really name a F2P game that is as polished and in-depth as SWTOR (although that isn’t to say there isn’t some awesome F2P titles out there). While SWTOR might not have worked on a subscription model, you can get over a lot of its current faults with the sweet price tag.

Price point perfect: free.

Are you getting a bang for your non-existent buck? The answer is, of course, yes. SWTOR uses a kind of unique F2P model. As a free player you get a limited amount of warzones and flashpoints and no operations unless you purchase a pass with cartel points. You can, however, level from one until fifty with no interruption. You can’t equip some items, you have to buy more inventory, and a slew of other quality of life things are removed, from ultimately you can still play the game and not pay a single dime to do most of the content.

Free Single Player Game

As mentioned above, your entire story mission is free. That means you can play from one to fifty without having to pay any money at all. Most of the players who I talked to at launch and the few months short thereafter were mostly interested in the story missions and most of the fun they derived from the game was playing through the different story missions for the different classes. SWTOR works exceptionally well as a single player RPG and the price point just drives home how anyone who loved Knights of the Old Republic should give SWTOR a try.

Sure, there are a few differences, like the game isn’t perfectly setup as a single player RPG. Unlike KOTOR, you can’t pause the game and select an action, but you can play through the entire game without having to group and you get to witness the entire story unfold. The only annoyances are the limited inventory space and lack of some of the subscription / preferred user options like trading.

A Fair F2P System

It’s rare that I call any F2P system fair. The reason being is that some of them just go too far with their limitations, like making you pay for resurrections or XP scrolls in order to even level without devoting your entire life to the game. SWTOR’s system has shown that it is a tier above the rest when it comes to how it’s structured. First, those who are purely F2P have limited chat and trade functions, removing the risk of legions of gold sellers arriving to spam every single person in the game. Second, if you buy anything, from a month of subscription time to some cartel coins, you’ll automatically get some premium bonuses.

Subscription players continue to receive ultimately the same experience they did before the F2P switch. Which is actually very nice, because you can take a break from the game and play F2P only, allowing you to chat with your friends and play a few warzones each week.

Frequent Updates

Jeff Hickman has reaffirmed BioWare’s commitment to keeping the game update, with six week update cycles and a focus on making F2P work. A lot of F2P games don’t see very frequent updates, which is part of their nature. They’re self-sustaining games that see a big update every year or so. BioWare has put out a commitment to bring frequent updates to the game and increase testing of their updates, especially after 1.4’s buggy release.

Ultimately, there are a lot of good reasons to come and try SWTOR on the 15th when it goes free-to-play. For those of you who haven’t tried the game before, there is a large world out there with tons of story missions and a complete AAA game waiting for you to give it a try. For those who left, there is an opportunity to give the game another try and pick up from where you left off.

Sorry bu their f2p system isn't fair and extremely restrictive. Second the bug fixes and being so polished for a f2p game is crap. It's too little too late at this point as it should have been polished at release(with bugs as no game is bug free) especially since it was supposed to be a AAA game. Third, free and a free single player game are the same thing just worded differently. If you are stretching to come up with 5 reasons to try swtor then that should be a warning beacon to all

Hmmmmm.... Looking at the Free-to-Play model here and comparing it to something like say LOTRO, I'm not really sure how it is entirely fair... It restricts chat, banking and a load of other things that I normally take for granted. However I must say I'm happy its going F2P. I've never paid a sub for a MMO yet in my life and am very happy that I can just play right through the storyline without restriction.

I do not need and additional reasons. SWTOR is still my best, most fun, game ever, 2nd close Wow. Sometimes maybe would put both on trone. For the rest, Gw2, Rift, ....

First off I played SWTOR since the game day. I admit I enjoyed the game over all however being promised new content for so long as a subscriber and doing the same thing over and over again gets boring when no new content is added. So admittedly I left when GW2 came out. What I find sad is the F2P that Swtor is talking about to me is a joke when I can get new content, PVP, WVW, dungeons and story line all for free in GW2. I think limiting swtor's benefits of game play is totally not worth going back to as much as I enjoyed the game. It has so much room to expand and create new planets, races and worlds with new level caps but if swtor can not even remotely offer what GW2 offers why would I want to go back?

Thanks...but no thanks. Limited 'trade', meaning i can't even trade stuff with my friends? Wow...and it's called "fair" ? Seriously? Even the antique Perfect World has that function FREE. 5 reasons to come back... which kinda turned in 3 overstretched to make 5. It's just another way to milk the game for what is left. I'll stick to GW2 which doesn't restrict me at every point in the game, thank you. SWTOR you HAD your chance with me, i bought the game and had 4 months sub before i finally couldn't take the boredom anymore. Go back? No sorry, i am not a masochist.
